Sat 16th August – Day 98: Berry Springs – Litchfield National Park

A weekend meant we could spend all day at the nearby Territory Wildlife Park, which showcases Northern Territory wildlife in natural bush habitats. Set on 400 hectares of bushland, 6km of walking trails and a free shuttle train link 26 major exhibits. We managed to see just about everything and walked all of that 6km - the highlight was the birds of prey display which used similar techniques to both Taronga Zoo and Alice Springs Wildlife park in that the birds are trained to perform on queue, however all these birds were top end ones – eagles, kites, owls and even a Jabiru.
We finally left around 4pm to make our dash into Litchfield Park via Batchelor (where a quick stop enabled us to get a detailed map of the area, as Tom Tom was once again completely lost!). Our aim was to camp at Blueys Rockhole, however on arrival the place was packed and no room for the trailer. We found the same problem at Florence and Wangi Falls so had to continue just outside the park to Litchfield Safari Camp. Here we found a secluded spot centred around a fire-pit and surrounded by Woolybutt trees. Dinner eaten outside under the stars with the Citronella candles valiantly trying to keep the mosquitoes away.
