Pete off early to see if the car windscreen could be done today (as we had arrived a few days ahead of schedule). The kids have no further interest in visiting more museums or places of interest (the School of the Air, Stockmans Outback hall of fame, Banjos Outback theatre show) – they are a little over everything at the moment and the Whitsundays will be a welcome change of pace.
That being the case they did get stuck into school this morning and worked solidly for about 4 hours doing various projects. By 12:30 I sent them out for a Spa and Pete trudged back to town to see if the car was ready – no such luck and we didn’t manage to leave the caravan park until 3pm (we could have easily stayed another night there but we have all got quite a dislike to caravan parks and only use them when absolutely necessary – bush camping is far more our style and the kids are now confirmed pyromaniacs, running off into the bush at every opportunity to drag back large logs for the ‘fire’!
We decided to head back onto the dirt and take the shortcut to Hughenden via Muttaburra. By 4pm we were just outside of Muttaburra and keen to have another campfire. The Pump Hole promised BBQ’s and swimming under the shade of 100year old gums with ideal fishing for Golden Perch, Black Bream and Jew Fish. Mmmm not quite like the brochure – the hole was about ¼ full of very muddy water and the campsite was little more than a well worn dusty track around an ancient BBQ, but what the heck, there was no-one around. With the sun setting Pete & Toby took their lures down to the muddy puddle and promptly pulled out 2 good sized Black bream. Ever the optimists they threw them back, confident there were bigger ones to be had! With the yabby pot set, we settled down around the camp-fire to watch a symphony of stars and 1 very bright satellite which seemed to pass just above the tops of the trees (Chloe convinced the ‘Min Min’ was calling!).
