Lazy start this am, we said goodbye to our new friends Debbie and Ian and set about finishing off some school stuff. By 11am we were done with it and keen to pack up and be on the road. We dragged the kids away from the next-door neighbours and off along the bitumen we went. The landscape changed rapidly as we turned off onto Luritja Road, heading towards the MacDonnell Ranges with ‘mulga’ trees becoming more prolific and less open space to be seen.
Stopped along the way to grab some roadside firewood, as you can’t collect in the national parks. Then gasped, as first a herd of camels and then wild brumbies with young in tow galloped across the road all within the space of about 500m – there must be water nearby as the tracks were evident crossing the tar for the next few kms.
Arrived at Kings Canyon just before dusk so had time to set up before taking the short walk to watch the sunset over the Canyon some 5km in the distance.
