An awesome nights sleep, although I must say without the sunlight I would have been quite happy to lie in bed reading all day - how do people get up in this town?
Finally managed to extract the kids from an unused mine shaft about 10am and we were on our way NW to Corner country. Dirt roads all the way and the trailer is covered in red, many emus, red kangaroos, the odd sheep and cattle seen. We ventured off the main track to see the salt lakes at Cobham, only to notice the PVC pipe that carry’s the awning poles had been pierced by a rock and the crack was spreading. A little further up the main road we visited the historic gravesite of ‘Eliza Kennedy’ whoever she was.
According to a Google search - Kennedy, Eliza. Marble headstone at the site of a former hotel at Cobham Lake between Broken Hill and Tibooburra. Reads "In memory of Eliza Kennedy, aged 32 years, who died 6th January 1886". She was said to be the housekeep at the hotel, and suffered from epilepsy.
Anyway she was obviously watching over us as on the way back to the car I noticed we only had 1 bike on the back not the usual 4, the rack at snapped off at the base. Re-viewing photos of the lake we could see the bikes were present and so backtracked only a little way to find them lying in the sand un-hurt by their plummet from the trailer back. We jury-rigged them on top of the trailer and although Pete’s wheel is history (having punctured at Dubbo and totally collapsed now) the rest will live to see another outing.
Tibooburra the hottest town in NSW was a cool 21C on entry and we stopped only briefly for supplies before heading 2km out of town into Sturt National Park and the Dead Horse Gully Camping Area. Nestled among the large boulders after which the town was named the campsite is well set up with bush toilets, gas BBQ’s and picnic tables, once again it is just us and nature with no one else here.
After dinner I sat outside with laptop at hand and wrote this journal – a few clouds, a nearly full moon, countless stars, the night noises and peace! Does it get any better?
