Fri 19th September – Day 132: Monkey Mia

This morning the kids were up early again, racing through breakfast and down at the beach before 7am to be in the running to feed the dolphins. Both were successful and were asked to feed at the first visit. They came back ecstatic and I took the opportunity of an overcast morning to sit them down and do school by the beach! They worked well right up till lunchtime when the sun started to break through and we called it quits for more physical pursuits.
The boys got the local goss and headed North in the car to a secret fishing spot. Chloe & I got the same goss and with the wind was blowing strongly from the Northwest set of straight into it in our double kayak, up the bay towards the fishing spot the boys were heading for.
45mins later Chloe & I paddled into the beach, happy to have a rest after seeing lots of stingrays and crabs in the shallow choppy waters. We joined the boys for some fishing for an hour or so, caught a few small whiting and then just as we contemplated a lovely drift back home the wind changed direction coming in force from the Southeast. We spent the next hour battling wind and tide to make it back to the beach, arriving exhausted but happy. Chloe was an absolute trooper and didn’t complain once during the long hard paddle home and only took a few short rests when she said her arms were burning! A long hot shower saw us both revitalised and ready for our fish dinner which the boys provided in the way of Spangled Emporer (Nor’west Snapper) and Flathead on the grill – yummy.
At 8pm we were rugged up and waiting for our Didgeridoo Dreaming Tour with Wula Guda Nyinda (which means ‘you come this way’). Unfortunately the wind meant no fire and our guide advised us to cancel and do a similar tour in the morning when hopefully the wind has died down a little. Thankfully we went home to bed as we were all exhausted from our day on the water.
