Mon 8th September – Day 121: – Broome via Beagle Bay Church

This morning I watched the sun rise over the beach – the colours just blow you away. Everyone else was up soon afterwards and we began the task of packing again – amazing how much stuff gets strewn everywhere when you stay for a couple of days.
By 9:30 we were off the sand and at the local ‘air’ stand pumping up the tyres for bitumen travel. We stopped off at Beagle bay to see the famous ‘Sacred Heart Church’ which was built in 1917. Mother of pearl, cowries, volutes and olive shells were gathered on the area beaches and used for mosaics on the floor, wall and alter providing a unique artwork for the local Nyul Nyul people. The church was being re-stored and re-painted while we were there, not by the local indigenous population but by 2 white contractors from Broome – a sad reflection of the local character yet again.
From Beagle Bay it was 100km on the dirt back to Broome, where we elected to stay at the Cable beach again as the pool is inviting and it’s close to the shops.
I managed to get 6 loads of washing on at once (this is the first time mind you) so had everything on the line in under an hour. Then off to Woolies for the obligatory food shop while the kids and Pete enjoyed the pool.
Microwave roast chicken for dinner and a trashy magazine indulgence (there are always hundreds of them in the laundries) were the order of the night.
