We packed up this morning to head further up the peninsula to Kooljaman where we had managed to book a beachside shelter. Arriving around lunch-time we were delighted to find our shelter ‘Bugar’ overlooking the swimming beach on the eastern side of the Cape. We had to let our tyres down to 18psi to get the trailer over the soft sand and the kids were delighted to find it was made from bush poles with palm frond roof and walls and a sand floor. Inside was a picnic table, open fresh water shower and a wood barbecue.
We set up the tent inside (no fly necessary), the all important hammock, unpacked the trailer and headed down to the water, again crystal clear and just about high. Surprisingly the water was very salty and you were able to float around with little effort. The kids rode their boogie boards on the gently rolling swell and we witnessed whales migrating south just offshore, pretty idyllic.
Chloe & I decided to spruce the place up and used our many shells and Pete’s tangled fishing line (which he keeps for tracers) to make a shell wind chime which we hung under the name of our shelter.
Later the kids hunted hermit crabs and had crab races with the neighbours kids – reminded us of yabbie racing in Rankin Springs Easter 2007….
Candle light, BBQ dinner, sunburnt salty bodies, washed clean under the cool shower of the shelter saw us sitting under the stars and the intermittent strobe of the lighthouse above, wishing we could stay here forever.
Beach Shelter ($76/night)
