Well the wind blew strongly most of the night, but it was the constant dumping and crashing of the waves on the shore that made me bleary eyed this morning (obviously the rest of the crew slept like babies!).
Pete rushed through a pancake breakfast and then disappeared rod in had towards the rocks. Toby and Chloe started a game of ‘chicken’ with the waves, which went Ok for the first ½ hour or so until Chloe lost her footing and got dragged out towards the breakers, scaring her silly. At that she retreated to the sand above the tidemark and proceeded to create a city complete with swimming pools, underground car parks, playgrounds and hotels. Toby lost interest after building a sea wall around the entire thing to keep out the encroaching tide and disappeared with his rod to join dad on the rocks.
I spent the morning working hard on my tan, rolling over at regular intervals and ploughing through yet another book – the perfect way to spend a day when you are bleary eyed.
The boys arrived home at lunchtime with some kind of red coral fish for dinner and other tales of humongous long-toms and birds caught with lures.
During the heat of the afternoon a siesta was warranted for the adults and the kids watched a DVD in the trailer. Afterwards we managed another walk along the beach and met the local kids (who live here full time) playing in the rock pools and staring at a sea snake (which had been washed ashore, missing it’s upper jaw and right eye). The poor thing was still alive and since it was minus the bitey bits we were able to get up close and see how the flattened tail propelled it through the shallows. The reptile book suggested it was probably a ‘yellow-bellied sea snake’, normally highly venomous. Later it washed up ashore, still alive and Toby spent an hour or so building a shelter so that the birds didn’t attack it.
Fish on the BBQ tonight with rice and salad – the wind has died down and the surf continues to diminish so tonight I should sleep!
